What Hours Can a Cosmetologist Work?

What-Hours-Can-a-Cosmetologist-Work

Cosmetologists’ hours can be very flexible. While some may work full time, others may be able to follow a less restraining schedule than the regular 9-to-5.

Many cosmetology professionals have the opportunity to create their own preferred schedule or working hours, though flexible schedule is largely dependent on the cosmetologist’s place of employment.

Where Can a Cosmetologist Work?

A cosmetologist can pursue employment in a number of different avenues. They can choose to specialize as any of the following:

  • Hair stylist
  • Nail technician
  • Salon or spa manager
  • Beautician
  • Wedding and event stylist
  • Makeup artists
  • Esthetician

While employment for cosmetologists is typically found at a salon, spa, hotel or resort, other industries may also employ cosmetologists.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the industries with highest levels of employment for hairdressers, hair stylists, and cosmetologists are as follows:

  • Personal care services
  • General merchandise stores
  • Health and personal care stores
  • Motion picture and video industries
  • Traveler accommodation

Cosmetology Hours Vary by Employer

Depending on the employer, cosmetologists may not need to maintain rigid schedules. Flexible hours, with morning, daytime, or evening shifts, can be great options for busy individuals like moms.Plus, there’s a large potential for part-time positions. Quite a few salons and spas are open during the weekend and closed on Mondays, for example. Because these businesses have broad hours of operations, there’s more room for customized schedules. Many salons have changed hours to accommodate needs of clients that work 9-5. Salons may open later in the morning to accommodate remaining open later in the evening, and evening and weekend hours may be common. Adapting salon hours to allow working clients to book appointments may be referred to “primetime hours.”Cosmetology provides the opportunity and potential to become an entrepreneur and own your own business. With your very own salon or spa, it’s important to note that many owners often work long days, though you would be able to set your own hours.
