Meet Barrett

1st Place Winner - 2026 East Peoria Competition

We sat down with Barrett to talk about his experience competing and what makes welding something he truly enjoys.

As a senior at East Peoria Community High School, Barrett has been welding for nearly a year through the ICC program and quickly discovered a passion for the precision and skill that comes with the trade. His favorite part? The challenge. From pipe welding to working through difficult angles, Barrett enjoys pushing himself to improve every step of the way.

Out of 51 total competitors representing 16 different high schools, Barrett earned First Place and was awarded a $5,000 MTI scholarship.

Barrett also shared one of his biggest takeaways from the competition: skilled trades are for everyone. No matter your background or experience level, talent and hard work can take you far.

At MTI, it’s about more than just competition…

It’s about building skills, gaining confidence, and helping students take the next step toward their future in the skilled trades.
