A total of $15,000 in MTI scholarships were awarded to high school seniors at Saturday’s competition

Springfield, MO.– Sparks were flying at Midwest Technical Institute (MTI) this Saturday as several high school seniors across the southwestern Missouri region competed for a chance to demonstrate their welding skills and the opportunity to win an MTI scholarship.

Thirteen high school seniors received $500 scholarship awards, but the top prizes went to the winners in the senior division of the competition.

  1. First Place: Arnold Cavazos of Scott Regional Technology Center; awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Scott Regional Technology Center will also receive a $1,000 donation from MTI.
  2. Second Place: Mathew Edward-Cooper of Scott Regional Technology Center; awarded a $2,500 scholarship.
  3. Third Place: Seth Miller of Lamar Career & Technical Center; awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

The MTI High School Welding Competition was held Saturday, March 27th, 2021 at MTI’s Springfield, Missouri campus location. The annual competition resumed this year after being canceled last year due to COVID-19.

Director of High School Admissions, Louie Schonauer, described the importance of this year’s competition amidst the challenging times facing high school seniors: “It was important to bring the welding competition back safely this year, in order to offer local high school seniors an opportunity to compete for scholarships and to learn more about career training in the welding industry. We know high schoolers are facing unprecedented times, and we’re here to help seniors explore another path after high school-a career in the skilled trades industry. We will continue to build on the success of this year’s competition, and to grow our welding competitions in order to offer more of these opportunities to local seniors.”

Competitors came from across southwest Missouri, representing the following high schools: Scott Regional Technology Center, Lamar Career & Technical Center, Ava High School, Galena High School, and Pierce City High School.

The welding competition offers high school students more than an opportunity to showcase their welding talents. Participants and their families had the opportunity to tour MTI’s campus, meet with Financial Aid and Admissions Representatives, and learn more about MTI’s Welding Programs.
