According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, cosmetologists provide a range of different services including hair cleaning, haircutting, and hairstyling. They also provide facial and scalp treatments, makeup analysis, and skincare and nail services.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in May 2024 was $16.95. It’s important to note that many cosmetologists receive tips from their customers, and that high-quality work and exceptional customer service are typically attributed to higher tips.

Cosmetologists work mostly in a salon, although some work in a spa, hotel, or resort. Some lease booth space from a salon owner, others manage salons or open their own shop after several years of experience.

Most programs require a certain number of clock hours, such as 1,500 – 2,000 hours. At MTI you can complete training between 13 and 16 months.
