Trucking FAQs

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers help transport goods across distances, frequently traveling across the country on a set schedule. These long-haul drivers require special training as total cargo weight typically exceeds 26,000 pounds.

There are a variety of commercial vehicles that truck drivers operate, including dry vans, freights, flatbeds, tankers, and more. Each of these truck driving jobs require a Commercial Driver’s License, or CDL.

Understanding the difference between Class A and Class B CDL can help you better understand which license you need to become a CDL driver

At MTI, you’ll be prepared to earn your CDL A, which allows you to operate any vehicle with a semi-trailer or a trailer with two or more axles. A common Class A vehicle is a tractor trailer, also known as a semi.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in May 2024 was approximately $57,440. The highest 10% earned more than $78,800.

The BLS predicts about 237,600 openings (on average) for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers each year from 2024 through 2034. The U.S. economy has historically relied on CDL drivers to keep pace with supply chains—with additional demand for goods, additional commercial drivers will be needed.

The process for getting your CDL can vary from state to state. MTI can help you navigate your CDL options and requirements, as well as give you a step-by-step guide on how to get a CDL in Illinois.
