Cosmetologists play an important role in helping people look and feel their best! The School of Cosmetology at Midwest Technical Institute prepares students to succeed in the beauty industry, whether you want to be a hair stylist, nail technician or salon owner. At MTI, you’ll be trained in a variety of cosmetology skills through  hands-on training in a real salon environment.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, cosmetologists are trained in a variety of beauty services related to hair, nails and skin. Cosmetology students at MTI are trained in all areas (nails, hair, and skin) although they may choose to specialize in one area or provide a full range of service offerings to future clients.

Cosmetologists learn beautifying skills related to hair, nail and skin care. At the School of Cosmetology at MTI, you will learn different forms of hair styling and hair coloring. You will also learn proper technique and sanitation guidelines, manicures and pedicures, and the basics of skin care.

People with cosmetology degrees or diplomas typically work at salons or spas. A career in cosmetology allows flexibility, as you can often set your own schedule. At The School of Cosmetology at MTI, graduates of the Cosmetology Program earn a cosmetology diploma.

Usually, a high school education or GED is the first step toward enrolling in cosmetology school. Cosmetologists must complete training from an accredited school, such as Midwest Technical Institute. MTI’s Cosmetology Program prepares students for the Illinois cosmetology licensing exam or the Missouri cosmetology licensing exam, depending on which campus you attend.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, cosmetologists’ median hourly wage was reported in May 2022 as $16.01, with the top 10% of earners making more than $29 per hour. The industry is anticipated to grow 8% from 2022-2032.

Cosmetology program costs vary significantly by type of school, the length of the program, and several other factors.
